Helene H. (Porter) Smith

June 7, 1923 ~ September 2, 2016 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Weymouth – Helene H. Smith 93 years of age passed away Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Royal Norwell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Scranton, PA and had resided in Weymouth for the past forty years. She graduated from Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania and took post graduate studies at Syracuse University in NY. She had been a teacher and substitute teacher in Weymouth and Braintree schools for many years and previously taught physical education classes in Pennsylvania. She had been the captain of the Field Hockey team in college. Helene was a past member of the First Baptist Church in Wollaston and the Weymouth United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and knitting.  Above all she enjoyed being with her family members especially her grandchildren.  She was a fan of all Boston sports teams.  She was the wife of the late Reverend Lynn C. Smith who was a former pastor of the Weymouth United Methodist Church and he was the principal guiding hand of the Mariners House in Boston for more than twenty years. Reverend Smith was Chaplain for the Port of Boston. Helene was the loving mother of C. Jason Smith and his wife Jo-Anne of Whitman and Lynda Saviano and her husband Andrew of Halifax, MA and the late Stefan J. Smith who is survived by his wife Nancy of Whitman. She was the loving and devoted grandmother of David Smith of Weymouth, Andrea Mulcahy of Burlington, Megan Saviano of Halifax, RCT. Andrew M. Saviano of the U.S. Marine Corps and Lindsay Chatman of VA. She was proud to be the great grandmother of Daniel Mulcahy. Helene was predeceased by her twin brother Hale Porter who is survived by his wife Alice Porter of Montrose, PA. Visiting hours will be at the Mortimer N. Peck-Russell Peck Funeral Home 870 Broad Street (opposite the U.S. Post Office in Jackson Square) East Weymouth on Wednesday, September 7th from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, September 8th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Village Cemetery, Weymouth Landing.
