BRAINTREE - M. Cathleen (Cushing) Kelley, at the age of 92, passed away peacefully in her family home in Braintree. Cathy was born in Braintree and a graduate of Braintree High School where she played on the field hockey team. After graduating High School, Cathy began working at the Shawmut Bank in Boston as a Loan Officer. Her first loan was to her mother so the Cushing Family could purchase their first family car, a 1955 Chevrolet Sedan. Cathy met her lifelong husband while throwing a football with friends at Rexhame Beach in Marshfield, MA. John M. Kelley, Jr. of Waltham was impressed with her ability to accurately throw a football. Cathy got a lot of practice from her eight athletic brothers. M. Cathleen Cushing and John M. Kelley, Jr. would marry at the Cochato Club, in Braintree on October 12, 1957.
Cathy is survived by her son Robert E. Kelley of San Francisco, daughter M. Cathleen Kelley of Weymouth, and son Richard L. Kelley (wife Jean) of Norton. Her sister Joan M. Sullivan, and her brothers Edward T. Cushing, Joseph F. Cushing and Thomas R. Cushing. Cathy is also survived by 12 grandchildren Jacqueline M. Kelley, Ryan C. Kelley, Eileen M. Baldasarre, Nicholas T. Kelley, Matthew J. Kelley, Thomas J. Kelley, Jr., Joseph D. Kelley, Stephen M. Kelley, Vida C. Hasson, Forrest Sinnott, Victor J. Hasson, and Allison C. Kelley and 4 great-grandchildren, Arya, Brynn, Parker and Cormac as well as numerous special nieces, nephews, friends and loving neighbors. She also leaves behind former daughters-in-law Annemarie Kelley, Michelle Staples and Jacquelyn Rose.
Cathy is predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, John M. Kelley, Jr., her first son John M. Kelley, III, and youngest son Thomas J. Kelley; her loving parents Edna G. and Leonard S. Cushing, her brothers Leonard F., Robert S., Paul F., Richard J., William R. and sister E. Rosemarie Viola.
Cathy was devoted and loved being “Mum” to her five children then “Grammy” to her 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, and “Sis” to her siblings. She loved watching her beloved Boston Bruins and New England Patriots. Cathy treasured her family time doing yard work and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren swimming in the family pool. She valued family traditions and celebrating the Holidays. Cathy will be remembered and dearly missed by all she touched for her kind heart, her generosity and positivity.
Visitation hours will be from 9:00 until 10:00 am at Mortimer N. Peck Funeral Home located at 516 Washington Street, Braintree (781)843-0890. There will be a Funeral Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 856 Washington Street, Braintree on Wednesday October 22 at 11:00 am.
Burial to follow at the Blue Hill Cemetery.
