John Ananias Latak, 97, of East Weymouth, passed away peacefully at home in Duxbury. John was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Jean (Taber) Latak, in 2008, whom he met in Sunday School.
John grew up in Quincy Point and had been a longtime resident of East Weymouth and then Duxbury. He was a graduate of Quincy High School in 1945 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly thereafter. When John was stationed on Oahu, Hawaii, his love for the islands began. John began his career as a bank teller and ended his career as President of North Weymouth Cooperative Bank, retiring in 1992. He continued serving on the Board of Directors for many more years.
John and Jean enjoyed traveling, especially to John’s favorite destinations, including Maui to see the whales off the Kā`anapali coast. John made friends wherever he went. He was a Master Mason for 74 years in the Weymouth United Masonic Lodge and a lifetime member of the Braintree Yacht Club, where he kept his beloved sailboats Jinka and Keoni.
He is survived by his son David T. Latak married to Jane (Dowd) Latak of Marshfield and by his daughter Ruth Ann (Latak) Hickey married to Stephen Hickey of Duxbury. John was blessed with many grandchildren, including Julie (Latak) MacLean and Jim MacLean of Pembroke, Kate Latak of Jamaica Plain, Lorraine (Hickey) Lake and Tyler Lake of Seattle; Sarah (Latak) Liu and Hao Wei of Weymouth; Theresa (Hickey) Hall and Jason Hall of Plymouth; Claire (Hickey) Blanchard and Chris Blanchard of Plymouth; Matthew Hickey of Telluride, CO; and James Latak of Marshfield. John is also survived by his loving great-grandchildren Johnathan, Emersyn, Jameson, and Connor. John’s parents were the late Joseph and Anna Latak, both formerly of Quincy.
