HANNIGAN, Joan A. (Markunis) of Braintree, passed away peacefully, at home, on April 18,2026, at the age of 89.
Joan was born in Boston, the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Tourel) Markunis. She was a long-time resident of Braintree. Joan also lived in Billerica, Bedford and had a very special spot for South Boston “Southie” – M & Fifth. Joan graduated from Bedford High School in 1954. She retired from Boston Mutual Life Insurance after a 40+ years. Known for always having a smile for you and a quick quip. Joan had two special likes, her time spent up at her cottage in Dunbarton, NH and later in life Square Dancing – sometimes 7-days a week.
Joan was the beloved wife of the late William “Bill” Hannigan. She was predeceased by her dear brother the late Albert (Albie) Markunis of Marlborough and her niece Lea Ann Markunis of Framingham. She leaves behind her nephew Thomas (Tom) Merlin and his wife Anne of Hanson, a niece Patricia Arria and her husband Mike of Hanover and a niece and Goddaughter Dianna Hannigan of Alpharetta, GA.
Visiting Hours will be in the Mortimer N. Peck Funeral Home, 516 Washington Street, Braintree on Thursday April 30, 2026 from 5-7 PM followed by a brief service. In lieu of flowers please consider donating, in memory of Joan Hannigan to Old Colony Hospice, 321 Manley St., W. Bridgewater MA 02379
