BRAINTREE – James Weir Rooney age 89, entered into Eternal Life on April 6, 2025 at the South Shore Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
He served in the United States Army Airforce from 1953 to 1957. As well, he served in the Massachusetts National Guard from 1957 to 1960. He worked as a machinist at Boston Gear Works in North Quincy.
He started his family in Dorchester with his beloved wife, Barbara. They moved to Braintree in 1985. James was an avid fan of all the local sports teams.
James was born in Boston on October 3, 1935 to Robert Rooney and Marion (Briggs) Rooney. He was the Beloved Husband of Barbara (Boyce) Rooney. He was the brother of Robert and William Rooney, and Norma Jensen and Jean Ridgely. He was the father of Claire Lydon, Paula Rooney, Karen Palumbo married to Robert Palumbo, Neil O. Rooney and the late Mark E. Rooney. He was the grandfather of Kerri Lydon and her partner Dana Shaw, Patrick Lydon and his wife Heather, and Anthony Lydon and his partner Caroline Snow and Rob and Bella Palumbo. He was the great-grandfather of Aurora Fay, Julien Lydon, Maeve and Miles Lydon, and Dana Shaw.
Visiting hours will be held at the Peck Funeral Home 516 Washington Street, Braintree, on Friday April 11th from 4 to 8 PM. There will be a gathering on Saturday April 12 at the Peck Funeral Home at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church 856 Washington Street , South Braintree. Burial will follow at the Braintree Cemetery.
