Florence Vilensky Ellis was born in Haifa, Palestine on January 16, 1927 and passed away on December 2, 2022 in Rockland, Massachusetts. Her parents, Naum & Bettina Velinsky emigrated with Florence to England sometime before World War II and ultimately emigrated together to the United States after the war. Florence enlisted in the Royal Air Force on August 15, 1944 at the height of World War II. Florence served in the W.A.A.F.s, with the rank of Aircraftwoman, and successfully trained as a Meteorologist during her service. Florence was honorably discharged on April 8, 1946 at the termination of engagement. In Florence’s discharge certificate were the following comments of her conduct, qualifications, and character: “A.C.W. Vilensky has matriculated and has a good knowledge of English, French, German, Hebrew & Arabic.” Florence married John L. Ellis, a World War II veteran who fought in the Battle of Okinawa with the U.S. Marine Corps, who pre-deceased her in 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Rathbun, of New York City. Florence worked as a home health aide and held an undergraduate college degree. A graveside memorial service will be held at Braintree Cemetery, Plain Street, Braintree, MA, 02184 on Friday, December 30, 2022 at 10am.
