Donald G. Porter, a Braintree resident since 1967, died on December 29, 2023. Don was born in Boston on October 25,1938, son of Archibald and Constance (Gilson) Porter. He was the beloved husband of Diane (Walker) Porter, and loving father of Laurel P. Muldoon and Deborah W. Porter, both of Weymouth. He was also the grandfather of Alyssa, Andrea and Abigail Muldoon, and great grandfather of Cameron, Scarlett and Adrian. He also leaves several dear friends, whom he had known for long years. They know who they are. During his diverse working career, Don was a high school teacher, Federal Reserve bank examiner, Assistant Director of the Office for Research Contracts at Harvard University, Director of University Development and Assistant to the President for Federal Relations at Northeastern University, and a Resource Development executive and consultant to the University of Massachusetts Foundation, The Gorbachev Foundation of North America, and several higher education institutions in the New England area. He attended Boston Latin School, was a 1956 graduate of North Quincy High School, where he lettered as a member of the track team, and for many years enjoyed working on reunion planning. He received the AB degree in Political Science from Boston University, MBA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and served to the rank of First Lieutenant in the US Army Reserve. During their marriage of nearly 60 years, Diane and Don travelled to Aruba, Bermuda, Canada, England and Scotland, France, Italy, and Mexico, and enjoyed cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean. Don also travelled to Greece and Turkey with a group of friends to see the seven churches of Asia mentioned in The Revelation, and other ancient sites. His activities were reading, travel, walking with friends, and writing articles on a variety of topics, usually with theological orientations. He shared his writings with some close friends, and his research strengthened his faith. He was: a former Town Meeting Member; Trustee of Thayer Public Library; member of the Community and Youth Development Committee of the United Way of Mass. Bay and sub committee Chairman; Vice President and Board Member of the Braintree Historical Society; and served in several volunteer positions at First Congregational Church. He had also been a South Shore CampFire Board Member; was a Meals-on-Wheels driver for South Shore Elder Services; and a Member of the Braintree Men's Club. Funeral service will be at Peck Funeral Home, 516 Washington Street, Braintree, MA on Thursday, January 4,2024 at 10:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s name may be made to First Congregational Church of Braintree or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
