Donald Levy, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on March 17, 2026. Born in Boston in 1932, he spent much of his life in Braintree, Massachusetts, where he was a fixture in the lives of those he loved.
Don served his country as a veteran of the Korean War, where he specialized in bomb disposal – a role that suited his steady, methodical nature. After his service, he built a long career at the Boston Naval Shipyard, where he worked first as a boilermaker and then as supervisor of shipbuilding and repair. He also worked for a time at the Jacksonville Mayport Naval Station.
Don was a man who did things the right way – and if you were doing something any other way,he would be sure to let you know. He was strong-willed and deeply capable. Those who knew him well also knew he had a soft side — the man who pulled his grandchildren around in a wagon, mid-road, behind the ride-on mower, who kept a watchful eye at their every sporting event, camera always in hand, and who had a particular soft spot for his "great grand-dog”, whom he could reliably be found slipping food to under the dinner table.
His passions were many and pursued with characteristic dedication. He was an accomplished kite flyer who built and designed many custom kites. He loved photography, fishing on Lake Winnipesaukee with his family and the hours spent at his workbench in his basement where he could fix anything and would tinker away at whatever project had captured his attention.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joan; his daughter Susan Averill (John); his grandchildren John Averill (Shannon), Brittany Smist (Andrew), and Matthew Averill; also his great-grandson Jack Averill.
Private family services will be held.
