It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur Mostyn Morgan II. He was a truly one-of-a-kind man, father, husband, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He died peacefully, after a brief illness.
Arthur was born in Braintree, MA on February 6, 1930, to Arthur (& Angela) Mostyn Morgan I. He grew up in South Braintree Square. He was an excellent baseball player and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox organization to the minor leagues playing shortstop with several teams including The Wisconsin Rapids, The Superiors and Madisonville. From 1949-1953 he played in 400 games. He also played for, and managed within, the Cape Cod Baseball League. He served in the Army during the Korean War. It was while he was stationed at Fort Dix in New Jersey that he met his wife Grace at a Dance.
After his baseball career and army service, Arthur went to Eastern Nazarene College earning a degree in History but spent his career in Education as a guidance counselor for Cambridge Rindge and Latin school. He was beloved by all his students. He coached the varsity baseball team at Belmont Highschool. He passed along his gift for baseball to all three of his sons which gave him considerable pride. He was equally proud when his grandson Brett became a top baseball player and attended many of his games.
He loved spending his summers in Manomet with his wife and children. He started summering there in the 1940’s with his parents who were one of the first families in the summer community. He then built a cottage for his own growing family in 1968. He and Grace had many wonderful friends and good times in their summer neighborhood and enjoyed watching all their children grow up together. They loved to pick wild blueberries and beach plums to make pancakes and jelly for everyone and anyone that came over to the beach cottage. Arthur also had his realtor’s license and had a passion for buying, building, and selling homes.
Since retirement he had spent time in his beloved Manomet as well as travelling around Florida, especially the Keys where he had family.
He lovingly, (and sometimes amusingly), cared for his father-in-law (Pop Pop), his beloved wife Grace and his only daughter Carol until their passing. He was a devoted, selfless caregiver and did his best to accommodate the needs of those he loved.
Everyone who met Arthur immediately liked him. He never ceased to do or make amusing and comical statements without even knowing it. One of our favorites was after a family meal, he would get up and say, “That was a great dinner, see you later.” It was always met with laughter. We all thought of him as a real “character.” His booming voice lent a note of hilarity to anything he said.
There was never a project he felt he could not do himself. Whether it was removing shutters (while on a ladder), painting, mowing the lawn or caring for his grandchildren whom he loved and was enormously proud of. He was always available to help anyone who had their own projects and lent his expertise and wit to any endeavor.
He leaves behind a family and extended family that loved, admired, and enjoyed being around him. Sons Arthur III & his wife Maria along with her children Sara and T.J., Stephen & Dena (Bruce) Morgan and their children Brett and Faith, Drew Morgan (predeceased by his wife Susan) and his children Kerre and Elizabeth along with her husband John, and their newborn son Liam. His Daughter Carol (who predeceased him), her daughter Caroline and her son David as well as one of his favorite nieces Diane Whalen. He will be missed by the Bruce siblings and their children who grew up in their Manomet neighborhood and shared many wonderful memories.
Arthur leaves his sister Marion Shelton and was pre-deceased by his sisters Mildred DePaulo and Rita Gamache. He will be missed by his nieces and nephews.
We would like to think of Arthur as now being with his Gracie, playing in the majors, fishing on the beach in Manomet and not a care in the world.
We are respecting the wishes of Arthur and will be doing a private gravesite service that will be held on Friday July 19th at 10 am, Braintree Cemetery located at Plain Street.
