Bruce S. Burgess, 83, of Marshfield formerly of Norwell passed away at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth on Friday November 3, 2017. Bruce was born in Long Beach, California and was raised in Weymouth. He was a 1951 graduate of Weymouth High School. Bruce then joined the Army and was stationed in Korea. After his wartime service, Bruce went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater State College. Bruce became a teacher for the Weymouth Public Schools for the next ten years. He took a sabbatical to obtain his Master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. He then returned to Weymouth schools for two years before going to work for the Massachusetts Teachers Association in 1971, he then advanced to the position of Office Manager until his retirement in 1992. Bruce had lived in Norwell from 1978 until moving to Marshfield last year. While in Norwell Bruce was on many town committees and on the personnel board. He was a member of the affordable housing partnership and the Norwell Democratic Committee. Bruce also taught computer courses at the Norwell Public Library for many years after his retirement. His hobbies included Skiing, golf and playing basketball. Bruce is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Priscilla (Hollander) Burgess. He is the loving father of Christopher Burgess married to Terri of Abington, Derik Burgess married to Debbie Bowles of Provincetown. He was also the father of the late Elise Burgess and the late Scott Burgess. Bruce is the proud grandfather of Christopher Burgess Jr. and Alana Burgess both of Abington and Elise Burgess of Wellfleet. He is the devoted brother of John Burgess of Gardner, Maine and Steven Burgess of Florida. He was also the brother of the late Frank Burgess formerly of Long Island, New York. Memorial visiting hours will be held at the Mortimer N. Peck- Russell Peck Funeral Home, 516 Washington Street, Braintree on Friday November 10, 2017 from 1-2pm to be followed by a Memorial Service at the funeral home at 2:00p.m. Memorial Donations in Bruce’s Memory may be sent to The Norwell Public Library Foundation, 64 South Street, Norwell, MA 02061.
