Alice Sheehan Obituary

BRAINTREE - Alice Mary (Hines) Sheehan, age 91, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 27, 2018, after a brief illness at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA. She is survived by her loving husband James T. to whom she was married for 59 years, son Richard J., daughter Maura J. (Giles), son James, brother Richard Hines, son-in-law Edward M. Giles, grandson Jason M. Giles, Laura R. Protzman (partner to James), and many dear relatives, nieces and nephews.  Born in Rockland to Richard and Marion Hines, she was the eldest of her siblings (Bob, Richard, and Ruth) and very early on put her caring nature to work. Alice began her career as a cadet nurse, and when World War II ended went on to become a registered nurse working at the South Shore Hospital, Weymouth, MA and the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Boston, MA. She met her future husband James T. at a religious retreat for young single Catholics in Hamilton, MA and they were married soon after on November 11, 1957. She left nursing to become a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker, and even a few weeks ago was using her excellent cooking skills to make sure her family was healthy and well fed. Growing up through the Great Depression taught her to waste nothing and always be thankful, and her children and husband always came home to great warmth and love.  Alice had a wonderful smile that was her most common expression and loved to laugh and tell stories of her life that made you feel as if you were there too. Her passions included music, singing, playing piano and later acoustic guitar (into her early 80’s), writing poetry, and the natural world and its creatures from the northern mountains to the sea and in the backyard. She was also devoted to God and the church, a member of the Secular Order of Saint Francis, a CCD teacher, and a Eucharistic Minister. She had many great friends and neighbors and loved to help others. In a life that included many hardships and cares she remained joyful and always brought joy to those around her. Although she is gone from this Earth and dearly missed, her memory and spirit live on in the many lives she has touched. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours at the Russell - Mortimer N. Peck Funeral Chapels, in Braintree, at 516 Washington St. on Thursday November 1st, 2018 from 4 to 8 PM.  A funeral Mass in her honor will be held at the St. Clare Catholic Church at 1244 Liberty St, Braintree, MA, celebrated by Father C. Suarez, on FRIDAY November 2nd, from 9 to 10:00 AM, with Deacon Mike Cavanaugh in attendance, and with the burial to follow at 10:30 at the Holy Family Cemetery in Rockland, MA, at 92 Centre Ave, Rockland, MA 02370. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to her favorite charity: Edmundite Missions (http://www.edmunditemissions.org/).
