BRAINTREE
Richard Wilkie Jolls, 78 years of age, passed peacefully in his sleep on March 24th,
2024. Dick — also known by his call sign K1GUG, aka “GUG” — was born on June 6 th , 1945 to the late Richard and Ruth Jolls.
A life-long resident of Braintree, Dick is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 55 years, Patricia (Russo) Jolls, his son Christopher Jolls and his wife Darlene, his son
Michael Jolls and wife Maureen, and his daughter Jennifer Longobardi and her husband Benjamin, along with his grandchildren Austin and Kyle Jolls, Samantha and Izabelle Longobardi, and Michael Jolls. Also survived by his brother John Jolls of Connecticut, sister in-law Carol Dowell and her husband Jimmy of Weymouth — including several beloved nieces and nephews.
An admired teacher of Electrical Engineering at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Dick also founded his own radio engineering company, Broadcast Systems.
He consulted and acted as Chief Radio Engineer — building and maintaining radio stations across the country and on the island of Saipan. Dick enjoyed vacationing at his home on Cape Cod in Dennisport, MA where he loved spending time with family and friends barbecuing, sailing, and playing cribbage. A proud member of The American Radio Relay League, Inc. A-1 Operator Club since 1958 and The International Morse Preservation Society CW Club — he was especially passionate about morse code and ham radio — spending countless hours communicating with
call signs from around the world. Volunteering his time as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troops 22 and 24 of Braintree, Dick appreciated the rustic aspects of camping, found pride in aiding his troops to earn merit badges, teaching them valuable life skills, and guiding them through leadership training. He shared his Christian faith by lending his voice to the church choir and teaching Confirmation and Sunday School classes. Dick also devoted time to his community through his brotherhood and work as a Shriner and Master Mason at Delta Lodge.
Funeral services will be conducted at Peck Funeral Chapels, 516 Washington Street, Braintree, MA on Thursday, April 4, 2024. Visitation prior to the service starting at 10am-12pm. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend.
