Carol Muriel (Furlong) Whittaker

of Braintree Highlands, 88 years of age, entered Eternal Life on Monday, January 28, 2013 at her home.  She was born in Milton on Christmas Day 1924. She formerly lived in Wollaston and was a graduate of Quincy High School Class of 1942.  Carol subsequently graduated from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in 1944. She was the wife of the late Laban H. Whittaker, Jr. to whom she had been married for 40 years prior to his death in 1988. She was the devoted Mother of Joanne M. Hester and her husband Wayne R. Hester of Bridgewater, Barry H. Whittaker and his wife Lois J. Whittaker of Duxbury and Robert H. Whittaker and his wife Lisa O. Whittaker of Bridgewater. She was the loving grandmother of Jill Benitez  and her husband Benjamin of Bridgewater, Brian Hester of Halifax, Laura Whittaker of West Bridgewater, Diane Whittaker of Vernon Hills, Illinois, John Whittaker  of South Boston, Kerry Whittaker of Narragansett, R.I., and Nathan Whittaker of Waltham.  She is also survived by three great grandchildren. Carol was the sister of the late Marguerite Cramer and Ruth Smith.  Carol, a member of the Wollaston Congregational Church, where she was married in 1948, later joined the South Congregational Church in Braintree before affiliating with The First Baptist Church of Braintree. She sang with the First Baptist Church Choir until 2012.  In earlier years she was employed by the H. B. Humphrey Advertising Agency of Boston and belonged to the U.S.O. during World War II. She had a lifelong passion for music. She had been a soloist at the Wollaston Congregational Church for twenty-five years, and then sang with the Broadcove Chorale and the Unicorn Singers for twenty-two years. She had the opportunity to sing with the Old North Singers at the Old North Church in Boston in 1975 when Queen Elizabeth came to Boston. Carol played English Handbells with the Codman English Handbell Ringers from 1999 to 2007. Carol was a volunteer reader for the blind at Radio Station WATD with the Talking Information Center in Marshfield for 23 years. She participated in the activities of the Braintree Food Pantry and the Meals on Wheels.  She enjoyed knitting gloves, scarves, sweaters and hats for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, January 31st from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Peck Funeral Home 516 Washington Street, Braintree. A Funeral Service will be held at the First Baptist Church 594 Washington Street, Braintree on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. The Reverend Robert Killeffer will officiate. Burial will follow at Braintree Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be sent to the Laban H. Whittaker, Jr. and Carol M.
